EXPOSING WASHINGTON

GAS’ LIES

Washington Gas is wasting your money, polluting your air, and fueling a climate crisis to prop up its dirty, expensive energy.

Washington Gas has spent decades driving up costs for D.C. residents, polluting the air we breathe, and fueling the flames of the climate crisis. The corporate utility was even caught spreading disinformation about climate legislation—all while padding the pockets of its wealthy executives. Now Washington Gas is trying to charge us for unnecessary new methane gas pipelines so they can lock us into paying for their dirty, expensive energy for decades to come.

There’s no way around it.
Washington Gas is a bad neighbor.

We don’t have to pay more to prop up Washington Gas’ lies. By upgrading our homes with better insulation, electric rewiring, and highly efficient heat pumps, D.C. residents can save anywhere from $200 to $600 per year, depending on the specifics of the household. These savings can increase to $1,100 if a household adds solar, according to the D.C. Department of Energy and the Environment.

  • $12 Billion

Washington Gas wants to sink $12 billion of customer money into propping up its broken methane gas system, paid for by surcharges on your gas utility bill.

  • Explosive gas leaks are up 40% compared to 10 years ago.

Even though Washington Gas spent hundreds of millions to prevent leaks, Grade 1 gas leaks from Washington Gas’s system, which are deemed “explosive,” are up 40% since 2014 in D.C.

  • ‘D’ grade for ozone pollution

Burning fossil fuels in our homes is driving unhealthy air in D.C. by emitting nitrogen oxides (NOx), a key ingredient for ozone pollution. D.C. just received a failing grade for the third year in a row for ozone pollution from the American Lung Association.

  • 22% of D.C. emissions comes from burning methane gas

Washington Gas is fueling the climate crisis. Its leaky methane gas system is responsible for 22% of D.C.’s greenhouse gas emissions.

Washington Gas is threatening your health. D.C. utility regulators must hold Washington Gas accountable and plan for a future free from dirty fossil fuels. Tell the PSC: It’s time to move #BeyondGas
